On a wet and windy Saturday 6th February the North East Rugby League Champion Schools Finals were held at Monkton Stadium.
In the first game of the day Heaton Manor representing Newcastle and Durham Johnston representing Durham City went head to head for the North East Year 10 Champions title.
Heaton Manor opened the scoring through Sinclair Matthews, however not long after Chris Walker of Durham Johnston pulled the scores level. Richard Elliott and Tommy Sayers both scored prior to half time for Heaton Manor, in conjunction with a successful conversion for Sinclair Matthews the half time score was 14 – 4. In the second half Heaton Manor again applied the pressure with tries from Rob Reid, Alex Glover and Sinclair Matthews; three successful conversions from Sinclair Matthews left the final score 32 – 4.
The Man of the Match trophy was awarded to Rob Reid of Heaton Manor for his dominating performance throughout the game.
SSCo at Heaton Manor, Ted Baty commented “This has been a real success story for the pupils. They have driven this sport forward, showing a determination to play rugby league despite its minority status in Newcastle. They should be rightly proud of what they have achieved.”
With Schools represented from Durham, Newcastle and North Tyneside the event was well supported and highlights the growth of Rugby League throughout the region.
All the winning schools will now progress to the National rounds which will be held over the coming months.
